Join our annual season kick-off meeting to find out about the adventures you could have with the Backpack Section of the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. Meet our experienced guides who teach beginning and advanced backpacking skills and lead adventures into California’s world-famous parks and wilderness areas.

Backpack Section Calendar for 2007
Classes
Basic Backpacking Course
A comprehensive, introductory course to prepare beginners for our backpacking trips. Eight Tuesdays beginning April 17. The course includes 3 weekend backpack trips. $80 includes a text book, handouts, and room rental. (Trip costs are separate.) Organizer: Dan Cobb.
Lightweight Backpacking Course
An advanced class for experienced backpackers, covering the fast & light techniques used by through-hikers on the long-distance trails. Two packed days of weekend classroom sessions and one weekend trip, starting April 21. $40 includes a text book and handouts. (Trip costs are separate.) Organizer: Steve Sergeant.

Ohlone Trail
April 14. Fast & light 29 miles from Livermore to Fremont via Rose Peak and Mission Peak. 2 days, 1 night. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
Orestimba Wilderness, Coe SP
May 11. Fast & light 45 miles into this rarely visited wilderness. 3 days, 2 nights. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
Hoover Wilderness to Yosemite NP
Jun 30. From Green Creek into the Hoover Wilderness, over Virginia Pass to Yosemite NP and back. 5 days, 4 nights. Leader: Matt Hahne.
PCT, Sierra Buttes to Belden
July 1. Fast & light 92 miles north of Lake Tahoe via Sierra Buttes and the Feather River. 6 days, 5 nights. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
PCT, Interstate 80 to Highway 49
July 5. 40 mi of day hiking over three days, ending at Sierra Buttes. Leader: Dorie Stoessel.
Donner Summit to Devils Oven
July 14. A wild flower hike in the forest north of Lake Tahoe. 2 days, 1 night. Leader: Anne Gorby.
PCT, Sonora Pass to Ebbetts Pass
July 15. 35 miles of backpacking plus a layover day. 6 days, 5 nights. Leader: Dorie Stoessel.
Desolation Wilderness Lakes
July 21. Moderately strenuous overnight to visit remote sections and lakes. 2 days, 1 night. Leader: Anne Gorby.
PCT, Ebbetts Pass to Carson Pass
July 21. 33 miles of backpacking, plus a layover day to climb Round Top and/or Elephants Back. 6 days, 5 nights. Leader: Dorie Stoessel.
PCT, Carson Pass to Echo Summit
July 27. 13 miles of backpacking, plus a layover day at Showers Lake. 3 days, 2 nights. Leader: Dorie Stoessel.
S.E. Yosemite via Fernandez Pass
August 3 (tentative). No-pressure, out-and-back, fast & light trip, starting in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, hike into Yosemite. 4 days, 3 nights. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
Cottonwood Pass to Mt. Whitney
August 8. An easier way to reach the top of Mt. Whitney! 59 miles of backpacking and an optional 11 mile climb of Mt. Whitney. 9 days, 8 nights. Leader: Dorie Stoessel.
Hoover Wilderness, Twin & Crown Lakes
August 10. Moderately strenuous trip to Crown Lake, sitting on the Sierra Crest, with a layover day. 3 days, 2 nights. Leader: Anne Gorby.
Labor Day Basecamp Trip, TBA
August 31. More about this trip in July after we’ve scouted possible destinations. 4 days, 3 nights. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
Southern Ansel Adams Wilderness
September 15. Hike through a lake-filled area just outside of Yosemite. 2 days, 1 night. Leader: Anne Gorby.
Halloween Fast & Light Overnight
October 27. Fast & light 34.4 miles on the Skyline to the Sea trail from Castle Rock to Waddell Beach. 2 days, 1 night. Leader: Steve Sergeant.
