Classes and Programs

Basic Backpacking

Every spring, the Section offers a Basic Backpacking Course, taught by volunteer instructors from the Section. The course includes eight evening sessions (6:30 - 8:30), plus three weekend backpack field trips. The evening sessions cover topics ranging from buying a backpack to wilderness safety to minimum-impact hiking and camping. Trips give participants a chance to try out their new skills under the watchful eyes of the instructors, plus receive instruction in such field skills as operation of backpack stoves, bear-bagging, and use of map and compass.

Lightweight Backpacking

In April 2008, the Section presented our popular advanced class for experienced backpackers introducing lightweight and ultralight backpacking. We currently plan to offer it again in spring of 2009. The course will consist of two intensive, two-day classroom sessions over one weekend, plus a weekend field trip. Topics include lightweight philosophy, wilderness safety, commercial and home-made gear, trip planning, and more.

Trip Leadership

The Section also teaches a biennial Trip Leadership Workshop. The workshop is intended for prospective Backpack Section trip leaders and for current leaders who would like to brush up on skills, share experiences, etc. Topics covered include trip planning, on-trail leadership, wilderness emergencies and rescue, and leadership challenges. The cost is $40.

The workshop was last held in March of 2007. For more information, contact Steve Stearns at (408) 531-2166 or email, stearns @ ieee . org.
