Background Information, Low Impact Logging

There is another method of logging possible called low-impact logging or sustainable harvesting. It produces consistent profits for the logging company over the long term, more work for loggers, more wood for society – and leaves a diverse forest with more trees than were there initially.

Why isn’t it used more often?

Society’s emphasis today is on short-term financial results. Businesses judge and are judged by their bottom line next quarter not in five years. This emphasis causes some logging companies to choose the boom and bust of clearcutting. Low impact logging's short term profits are less than clearcutting, but their long term profits are greater. A sustainably harvested forest can be logged forever.

Collins Alamanor Forest successfully utilizes low impact logging practices today.
