VOLUNTEER EVENTS

Wanted: Technical Mapping Help

The Chapter's Geographic Information Systems Committee is looking for someone to help in our efforts with Ebbetts Pass Forest Watch. (www.ebbettspassforestwatch.org) We need 1) Google earth "fly-over" mapping of areas that have been clearcut or are planned for clearcuts; 2) A Google Earth tour of the clear cutting devastation that we could post on YouTube to show legislators, Boards of Supervisors, etc.; and 3) an ESRI ArcGIS map of prospective tree harvest areas.  If you want to help with these or other ongoing projects, contact Shawn Britton at 408-551-0722 or smbritton@comcast.net

Being Green – by Bob Groff

My wife helps a lot in my ‘experiments’ to lessen our carbon footprint. She puts up with some of my more outlandish ideas as well. One case in point is when I installed a bicycle hook above the guest bathroom bathtub. I borrowed the five gallon solar shower from our backpacking gear and hung it from the hook. The only comment she made was why I had to use a red bicycle hook. That experiment worked out pretty well in reducing our water and energy use. We used it for a couple of months until we installed a solar hot water panel on the roof. By then we were also in the habit of using less water for our showers. One area where we had a little difference was on the use of public transit. She would use public transit but preferred to drive her 2006 Prius. Things changed about a month ago when she was on the receiving end of a multi-car accident on highway 280. She was not hurt but the Prius was totaled. The Highway Patrol is following up on the possibility the person that caused the accident was using his cell phone at the time. It will take a bit of time for my wife to get over the jitters and public transit is now our number one choice. We are exploring the possibility of not replacing the Prius. We walk to the light rail station and ride the train together. Unfortunately it took a major incident for us to seriously look into reducing our use of a car. So far things are going quite well and we are enjoying our new lifestyle.

If you are thinking about making some changes, why not start off by seeing if you can give up driving one day a week? And who knows? You might find you enjoy your carless day so much you want to extend it to even more days. It takes a bit of effort but the lower stress levels are a plus. And to those that believe using their cell phone while driving is no problem, try thinking beyond your ear! Stop before more than a vehicle is totaled.   Give it a try.  It is up to each one of us.
