STS
The Loma Prieta Ski Touring Section (STS) of the Sierra Club leads ski trips to the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere.

Trips range from touring on skinny skis or snowshoes to backcountry skiing with fat skis or split boards on steep terrain.

Trips are rated to indicate the trip difficulty level. Lodging for trips may be in backcountry huts, snow camping, or staying in other private or commercial lodging.

We publish a newsletter (Track), we promote conservation of wilderness areas, and we hold meetings from November to May.

Meetings
The meetings are usually

1st Monday of the month, Nov-May,  7:30 - 9:30 pm
Peninsula Conservation Center (PCC)

3921 East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303

We are just beginning to gear up for the 2008/2009 season. The following are the events happening in the meantime and the trip list will be published later in November.

2008/2009 Calendar:

Oct 6th Monday  - Trip Leaders planning meeting
This is a meeting for current STS trip leaders and others interested in leading trips to discuss, plan, and coordinate trips for the 08/09 season. If you are interested in leading trips someday, come and learn. (PCC 7:30-9:30)

Oct 19th Sunday - Map and Compass Skills
Practice your map and compass skills at the Bay Area Orienteering Club (BAOC) event at Calero State Park. Not an official Sierra Club outing.  Details

Nov 3rd Monday  - STS Monthly Meeting (PCC 7:00-9:00pm) Note early start time. At this first meeting we will do a review of the ski trip list and then have a map & compass classroom session for the majority of the meeting. If you are new to the STS and want to learn more about ski touring or backcountry skiing please also consider the Decembder monthly meeting for a more general overview.

Nov 8th Saturday- Avalanche Beacon practice. 10:00 AM at San Gregorio State Beach. Practice using your avalanche beacon. Bring you own beacon (ok if it is a rental), ziplock bags and a shovel (for burying the victim beacons). Usually there are a few spare beacons for new people. Directions: from I-280 near Woodside, take Hwy 84 west over the mountains to Hwy 1, turn left then turn right into the San Gregorio State Beach parking lot. (Bring money to park.) Organizer: John Langbein, john_langbein@yahoo.com.

Dec 1st Monday - STS Monthly meeting (PCC 7:30-9:30pm) All are welcome. We’ll review the trip list and then do a gear demonstration. We’ll cover the differences/pros/cons of gear from skinny track skis with small boots to wide metal edged telemark skis and plastic boots (and everything in between.) If we have time we will also do a slideshow of past STS trips. Note the date of this meeting is the Monday after Thanksgiving. Put a reminder on your calendar because you won’t want to miss it.
