Elkhorn slough estuary kayaking trip pictures. There was a lot of wildlife, and we had fun paddling in shallow water. We witnessed a bat ray pupping along the shore with a group of researchers spending their summer surveying the shark population (see www.pelagic.org )

Twelve hikers enjoyed a cool Thanksgiving weekend hike at Castle Rock State Park. The park is noted for its scenic views of the Santa Cruz Mts. On this clear day, Monterrey Bay was visible to the South West. The sandstone cliffs and rocks make interesting formations, and are a favorite of rock climbers. There are 2 viewing platforms available at different points along the trail. One platform has display panoramas of local wildlife and plants and another for mountain identification.

Winter is a good time to hike in Phleger Estates, a heavily wooded park west of Woodside and accessible from Huddart County Park. The recent rains made the trails very green and filled the trailside creeks with an abundance of water. There were bridges to cross, colorful fungi to admire, squirrels scampering, and newts in danger of getting stomped. (Newts actually on the trail were scooped up by hikers and moved to safety.) The hike started at 10:30 at the trailhead, and returned at about 2:30PM. Lunch was at a creekside spot, a little beyond the halfway point. The route we took consists of several trails covering a variety of terrains, (examples of terrains here). Throughout the route we saw these unique trail signs, which are common in Phleger Estates.
