| Winter is a good time to hike in Phleger Estates, a heavily wooded park west
of Woodside and accessible from Huddart County Park. The recent rains made
the trails very green and filled the trailside creeks with an abundance of
water. There were bridges to cross, colorful fungi to admire, squirrels
scampering, and newts in danger of getting stomped. (Newts actually on the
trail were scooped up by hikers and moved to safety.) The hike started at
10:30 at the trailhead, and returned at about 2:30PM. Lunch was at a
creekside spot, a little beyond the halfway point. The route we took
consists of several trails covering a variety of terrains, (examples of
terrains here). Throughout the route we saw these unique trail signs, which
are common in Phleger Estates. |
