Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to Sierra Club members, guests, and the general public. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead.
  • All participants on Sierra Club Outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. A copy of the waiver may be found at http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/dayhiking/SignInWaiver1101.pdf .
  • The hike schedule is available on the DHS web page at http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/lomaprieta/dayhiking/ .
  • Hikers new to the group must call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet

    Thus a typical Saturday 4D outing encompasses 15-20 miles of distance and 3000-4000' of elevation gain.

    May 2 - Full Moon Mission Peak - Wed. - 2B.
    Meet the leader at Mission Peak trailhead (Stanford Av in Fremont) at 6:30pm. Bring warm clothes, water, and snack/dinner. Flashlight optional. Rain cancels.

    May 5 - Henry Coe BBQ and Hikes - Sat.
    Join the fun at the annual COE BBQ hike. Choice of hikes with different demands; to be determined depending on weather to optimize our fun! BBQ follows hike(s) at our traditional site (Manzanita Point). $12 includes parking fee (upper lot) and BBQ. Donations of salads, veggies, etc will offset the $12 cost. Carpools: 7:30am at Cubberley Auditorium, Montrose and Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto; no host carpool at Hwy 85 & Cottle Rd. 8am; or, meet at 9am at COE Park HQ. Please call organizer to sign up.

    May 12 - Audubon Canyon - Sat. - 4D.
    Moderately paced hike. Meet at Edgewood & I-280 P&R at 7:30 AM or at the Pantoll Ranger Station at 8:30 to enjoy flowers, views and nesting white egrets. We will return via the Cataracts. Moderately paced hike 4D. Meet at Edgewood Rd & Hwy 280 Park-n-Ride, 7:30am, or, at the Pantoll Ranger Station, Mt Tamalpais State Park, 8:30am. Enjoy flowers, views, and nesting white egrets. We will return via the Cataracts.

    May 19 - Butano State Park - Sat. - 4D.
    Loop around the park and enjoy views of forest and ocean in this park near Pescadero. Carpool: Page Mill Rd & Hwy 280 Park-n-Ride 7:45am.

    May 20 - Nancy Fitzsimmons Memorial Hike - Sun. - 3B.
    We'll place a plaque at the Memorial Grove in Big Basin and hike nearby. Meet at Big Basin headquarters, 9am.

    May 26 - Redwood Park - Sat. - 4C/D.
    Join us for a day in the wonderful park with great views and lunch at Huckleberry Preserve. Meet at 8am at Montrose and Middlefield Rd (Cubberly parking lot) in Palo Alto or at 9am at the Admin Bldg parking lot on Skyline Blvd in Oakland. Must call if you have not hiked with the group.

    May 30 - Windy Hill - Wed. - 2B.
    Fast paced evening hike through Windy Hill. Bring water, snacks, and a windbreaker. Meet at the park on Portola Road at 6pm SHARP.
