Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to Sierra Club members, guests, and the general public. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead.
  • All participants on Sierra Club Outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. A copy of the waiver may be found at http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/dayhiking/SignInWaiver1101.pdf .
  • The hike schedule is available on the DHS web page at http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/lomaprieta/dayhiking/ .
  • Hikers new to the group must call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet

    Thus a typical Saturday 4D outing encompasses 15-20 miles of distance and 3000-4000' of elevation gain.

    August 4 - Forest of Nisene Marks - Sat. 4D.
    Meet 8:00am at Los Gatos Park & Ride across from Baker's Square on Hwy 9.

    August 11 - Coastal Trail - Sat. 3B.
    Hike the coastal trail from Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to Half Moon Bay Bluffs via beach to Miramontes Point; return to Bluffs Park via high trail. Car shuttle between HMB and Fitzgerald MP. Carpool: 8:00am Edgewood Rd and Hwy 280 P&R.

    August 15 - Wunderlich - Wed. 2B.
    Fast paced evening hike through Wunderlich Park. Bring water, snacks, and a windbreaker. Meet at the park on Woodside Road at 6pm SHARP.

    August 18 - Purisima Creek - Sat. 4C.
    Join us on this jaunt among beautiful redwoods, possibly including a bonus park (or two). Call leader if you have not hiked with this group before. Carpool: 8:00am at Woodside and Hwy 280 Park and Ride, or, meet at 8:30am at the Purisima south parking lot (just north of Kings Mountain Rd and Hwy 35 intersection.

    August 25 - Fall Creek (part of Henry Cowell Redwoods Park) - Sat. 4D.
    Meet at 8:00am at the Park&Ride on Hwy 9 near Hwy 17, or, at 8:30am at the trailhead. Directions to trailhead: Hwy 17 South to Santa Cruz; turn off on the Mt Herman Rd exit; continue on Mt Herman Rd., cross Hwy 9 at Felton and go a SHORT distance on Felton-Empire Rd. The park entrance is on the right and watch for the sign. The hike will be mostly in shade in a lovely, mixed, evergreen forest.
