Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

2008 April



  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to Sierra Club members, guests, and the general public. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead. Carpool locations here.
  • All participants on Sierra Club Outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. A copy of the waiver may be found at http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/dayhiking/SignInWaiver1101.pdf .
  • The hike schedule is available on the DHS web page at http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/lomaprieta/dayhiking/ .
  • Hikers new to the group must call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet

    Thus a typical Saturday 4D outing encompasses 15-20 miles of distance and 3000-4000' of elevation gain.

    April 5 - Purisima, Sat, 4C.
    Pleasant park with nice views. Meet at 7:30am at Woodside and Hwy 280 Park and Ride or at 8:00am at the north main parking lot on Skyline Blvd. (about 3 mi north from Kings Mtn/Skyline Blvd intersection). Heavy rain cancels.

    April 12 - Sunol to Maguire Peaks, Sat, 4C-D.
    Start at Park HQ; go up Flag Hill and out to Maguire Pks for lunch, then back via the backpack camp trail. Suggested carpool: Meet at 8:00am at Mission Blvd and Hwy 680 Park&Ride (across from McDonalds) or at Park HQ at 8:45am. Must call leaders if you have not hiked with the group. Rain cancels.

    April 19 - Ed Levin to Sunol, Sat, 4D.
    The hike begins with a long climb to the top of Mission Peak before descending into Sunol Park for lunch. We will take the direct route back to Ed Levin after lunch. Meet at Ed Levin Park at 8:30am in the parking lot closest to the Sandy Wool Group area at the far side of the lake. No host carpool at Page Mill Rd and Hwy 280 Park&Ride at 7:45am.

    April 26 - SF Mission Murals and Beyond, Sat, 3B+ (10-12 miles).
    Our adventure will begin at Flynn Elementary School by Precita Park with a cultural and historical tour of the Mission Murals. We will return to the park and continue our hike to Bernal Heights Park and Glen Canyon Park before lunch in the Castro. After lunch we will find stairways to climb before returning to our cars. Must call leader if you have not hiked with the group. Carpool: Edgewood Rd and Hwy 280 Park and Ride, 8:15am.
