Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

December


  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to the general public and Sierra Club membership is not required. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead. While a carpool location is suggested in the schedule, participants must make their own carpool arrangements.
  • All participants on DHS outings are required to sign a liability waiver/sign-in sheet
  • Hikers new to the group are required to call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles
    (etc)

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet
    (etc)

    For example, a 4C hike would be up to 20 miles and up to 3000' gain.

    Dec 1 - Mission Peak to Sunol - Saturday 4C
    Meet at 7.30 am at the Stanford Avenue parking lot and trailhead. We will hike to the top of Mission Peak and then drop down and hike to Sunol Park. The strenuous part is hiking back from Sunol towards Mission Peak which is mainly uphill. Rain cancels.

    Dec 2 - Castle Rock Park - Sunday 3C
    Hike through forests, along ridges, and around rocks in this picturesque section of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Heavy rain cancels. No host carpool at Page Mill Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride at 8:00 am, Argonaut Shopping Center on Saratoga/Sunnyvale Road 8:30 am, or meet at the Saratoga Gap parking lot 9:00 am.

    Dec 8 - Mt. Tam Holiday Hike - Saturday 3C
    Weather determines route. Pot luck following hike at leader's home. Suggested carpool: 7:30 am Edgewood Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride. Call leader for trailhead information.

    Dec 15 - Skyline OSP to Long Ridge - Saturday 4D
    Beginning at Skyline, we'll walk through the Christmas tree farm and out to Long Ridge. If it is a clear day we'll have some great views. There is no water along the way. Heavy rain cancels. Suggested carpool at highway 280 and Page Mill Road Park & Ride at 8:00 am. Meet at Skyline OSP at 8:30 am.

    Dec 22 - Black Mountain - Saturday 4D
    A local hike in familiar territory in more than one park. Suggested carpool at Page Mill Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride at 7:30 am.

    Dec 29 - Mt. Diablo Eagle Peak - Saturday 4D
    Fight off the Rocking Chair with a strenuous hike around and up Diablo - about 17 miles, 4500 feet or so of elevation gain, some steep trails. We will start at the Mitchell Canyon trailhead, go to Eagle Peak, and continue to the summit. Return route to be decided. Suggested carpool at 8:00 am at Mission Blvd and Highway 680 Park & Ride (across from McDonald's) or meet 9:00 am at the Mitchell Canyon trailhead.
