Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

March


  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to the general public and Sierra Club membership is not required. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead. While a carpool location is suggested in the schedule, participants must make their own carpool arrangements.
  • All participants on DHS outings are required to sign a liability waiver/sign-in sheet
  • Hikers new to the group are required to call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles
    (etc)

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet
    (etc)

    For example, a 4C hike would be up to 20 miles and up to 3000' gain.


    March 2 - San Franciso to Mill Valley - Saturday 4C
    Across Golden Gate to Marin Headlands then coastal trail- Rodeo Beach, Tennessee Valley, Muir Beach and inland to Mill Valley for bus return. Carpool at 7:45 am at the Edgewood Road Park & Ride, or meet at the Golden Gate Bridge view area near restrooms by 8:20 am.

    March 2 - 4 Summits of Mt. Diablo - Saturday 5F
    Join the leaders as we climb Eagle Peak, North Peak, Mt. Diablo and Mt. Olympia. This will be fast and strenuous (6000 ft of elevation). Suggested carpool 7:00 am at the Mission Blvd and 680 Park & Ride (across from McDonald's) or 8:00 am at the Mitchell Canyon trailhead.

    March 9 - Rose Peak - Saturday 4D
    Follow the famous Brogan route for a complete loop to Rose Peak. Way back will provide an interesting alternative that regulars know well. Heavy rain cancels. Bring wind protection just in case... Suggested carpool at 7:45 am at Cubberly will be "NO HOST", and we will meet at 8:30 am in the parking lot at the Sunol HQ instead of the far parking lot as stated in the Loma Prietan. Rain will cancel.

    March 10 - Mt Sizer - Sunday 4D
    This is a wonderful loop with great vistas from the ridge. This hike will be fast and strenuous. Please call the leaders if you haven't hiked with this group. Heavy rain cancels. Carpool: 7:30 am at Cubberley High in Palo Alto (Middlefield & Montrose), or 7:45 am at Cottle & 85 Park & Ride, or 8:30 am at Henry Coe Park Hdqs. This hike is co-listed with the PCS.

    March 11 - Hike Leader's Meeting - Monday, 7:30 PM
    Meet in the Raptor Suite at the Peninsula Conservation Center, 3921 Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto. There will be hike sign up sheets for April, May, June and July. This meeting is open to all Sierra Club members. Please bring goodies to share.

    March 16 - Sunol to Ed Levin - Saturday 4D
    We will hike from Sunol to Ed Levin Park with a possible diversion up Mission Peak. After lunch at Ed Levin, we will hike back to Sunol. Meet at 7:30 am at the Mission Blvd Park and Ride off 680 in Fremont (across from McDonalds) or at Sunol Park at 8:00 am. No host carpool at Page Mill and 280 at 7:00 a.m.

    March 17 - Tarwater to Peters Creek Grove - Sunday 4C
    St. Patrick's Day hike from Pescadero Creek County Park to one of the finest stands of old growth redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains, accessible only by foot. No-host carpool at Page Mill Road and Highway 280 at 8:15 am, or meet at the Tarwater trailhead in Pescadero Creek County Park at 9:00 am. Co-sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Chapter. You must call leader if you have not hiked with this group before.

    March 23 - Trekking Mt Tamalpais - Saturday Sat 3/4C (with option of further mileage) 3000 ft.
    Start on south side trails, head west toward O'Rourke's Bench, onward to East Peak, then down to the lovely north side. As we head back around, choice of further mileage to those so inclined as we near the fork-in-the-road. Suggested carpool 7:30 am at Page Mill Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride or meet at Mountain Home trailhead at 9:00 am. Lunch and liquid required. This hike is colisted with the Black Mountain Group.

    March 24 - Mississippi Lake from Henry Coe Park HQ - Sunday 6F
    Fast and strenuous 26 mile hike with 5000 ft. of elevation gain through the backcountry of Henry Coe. We will be treated to outstanding views and wildflower displays. Carpool from Highway 85 and Cottle Road Park-n-Ride lot at 6:00 am or meet at Henry Coe Park HQ at 6:45 am. We will start hiking promptly at 7:00 am. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and at least of 3 liters of water. Dusk will probably be descending as we complete our hike. Heavy rain cancels. Route: China Hole, The Narrows, Willow Ridge Trail & Road, Mississippi Lk, County Line Rd, Bear Mountain, East Fork Coyote Ck, Jackass, Poverty Flat, Coe HQ.

    March 30 - Henry Coe, Burra Burra Peak - Saturday 5F
    More or less the same hike as last year but in the opposite direction. Start from the Gilroy Hot Springs trailhead on the Grizzly Gulch tr. and proceed via the Center Flats tr. to Burra Burra Peak for lunch. Then descend to Canada de la Dormida where we can get water (filter or purification recommended). We'll then have a steep climb out of the canyon and return via Willson Peak and the Spike Jones tr. Just over 20 miles with about 6000 feet of elevation gain; possible wet stream crossings and/or cross country. Meet at Highway 85 and Cottle carpool at 7:30 or at the trailhead at 8:30 (limited parking).
