Sierra Club Loma Prieta Day Hiking Section Schedule

November

  • All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to the general public and Sierra Club membership is not required. DHS activities begin and end at the trailhead. While a carpool location is suggested in the schedule, participants must make their own carpool arrangements.
  • All participants on DHS outings are required to sign a liability waiver/sign-in sheet
  • Hikers new to the group are required to call the hike leader in advance.

    The hike rating system is as follows:

    1 = Less than 5 miles of total distance
    2 = 5 to 10 miles
    3 = 10 to 15 miles
    4 = 15 to 20 miles
    5 = 20 to 25 miles
    (etc)

    A = Less than 1000 feet of total elevation gain
    B = 1000 to 2000 feet
    C = 2000 to 3000 feet
    D = 3000 to 4000 feet
    E = 4000 to 5000 feet
    (etc)

    For example, a 4C hike would be up to 20 miles and up to 3000' gain.


    Nov 3 - Double Hike - Saturday 4C
    Two hikes for the price of one. In the morning, explore Garland Ranch in Carmel Valley. After lunch drive to Garrapata State Park for a second hike with cactus, redwoods, and great views of the ocean. Optional dinner afterward. Suggested carpool at Cottle Road and Highway 85 Park & Ride at 7:30 a.m.

    Nov 5 - Hike Leaders Meeting - Monday 7:30 pm
    Meet in the Raptor Suite at the Peninsula Conservation Center, 3921 Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto. Tonight is election night for a new DHS chairperson. Remember you can’t vote if you don’t show up. There will be hike sign up sheets for February and beyond.This meeting is open to all Sierra Club members. Please bring goodies to share.

    Nov 10 - Redwood Park (East Bay) - Saturday 4C
    We will start from the admin building on Skyline Blvd. (just south of Joaquin Miller Rd.) and head up to Sibley through Huckleberry. Suggested carpool from Ex-Cubberley High (Middlefield Road and Montrose Road in Palo Alto) at 8:00 am. Hike starts at 9:00 am.

    Nov 17 - Henry Coe Park - Sunday 4D
    17-20 miles and 4000 ft. in Henry Coe Park. Possible stream crossings if there has been recent rain. Heavy rain cancels. Meet the leader at 7:30 am at Cottle and Highway 85 or no host carpool from Page Mill and 280 Park and Ride at 7:00 am. Bring a flashlight in case we take longer than expected.

    Nov 17 - San Francisco City - Saturday 3/4C
    Come join us on a hike with lots of hills, staircases, and sights. Meet at Edgewood Road and Highway 280 at 8:15 am or at The Flynn Elementary school at 9:00 a.m (3125 Cesar Chavez aka Army - exit Cesar Chavez and go west on Cesar Chavez for about 3 blocks. Park near the school or the Park.) We'll meet at the Mural behind the school. Bring lunch or money for lunch in an unique San Francisco restaurant. Call hike leaders for more specific directions.

    Nov 24 - Windy Hill - Saturday 4C
    Starting from the trailhead at Windy Hill we will hike over to the Nursery off of Skyline Blvd for lunch and tea, if you please, and return. Hike will be about 16 miles. Suggested carpool at 8:00 am at Page Mill Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride, or meet at the Windy Hill parking lot at 8:20 am. Must call leader if you have not hiked with the DHS before.

    Dec 1 - Mission Peak to Sunol - Saturday 4C
    Meet at 7.30 am at the Stanford Ave parking lot and trailhead. We will hike to the top of Mission Peak and then drop down and hike to Sunol Park. The strenuous part is hiking back from Sunol towards Mission Peak which is mainly uphill. Rain cancels.

    Dec 2 - Castle Rock Park - Sunday 3C
    Hike through forests, along ridges, and around rocks in this picturesque section of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Heavy rain cancels. No host carpool Page Mill Road and Highway 280 Park & Ride at 8:00 am, suggested carpool at Los Gatos at 8:30 am, or meet at Saratoga Gap parking lot at 9:00 am.
