Loma Prieta Chapter, Forest Protection Committee

Often called the lungs of the earth, forests help clean our air and regulate the climate. Forests filter our water, provide raw materials, recreation and inspiration. However, poor logging practices and planning threaten the future of our forests and wild lands.

Make the Right Choice

A FSC-certified forest in the Sierra Nevada

maintains forest habitat

A clearcut forest in the Sierra Nevada
destroys forest habitat

The current logging method of choice by the forestry industry is clearcutting.  To date, hundreds of thousands of acres have been clearcut in the Sierra Nevada and the North Coast.

The Forest Protection Commitee is working to stop this devastation by:

      1. Actively supporting Forest Ethics in their market-based campaign to Save the Sierra.

      2. Encouraging people and green builders to buy wood certified by the  Forest Stewardship Council.

      3. Promoting good forest legislation.

Please join and support our efforts.

!!! Action Alert - Write Letters on Forest Protocols !!!
On 9/25/2009 The California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved language in the Forest Project Protocols allowing clearcutting as a rewardable practice for sequestering carbon. This language flies in the face of university studies that show forests that have been clearcut are actually net emitters of carbon. Jim Stewart, co-chair of Sierra Club California’s energy and climate committee is quoted in the San Jose Mercury News article on the CARB vote: "This is ridiculous. We've got to save every single pound of carbon we can in the next 20 years. We can't allow any clear cutting." Find out more about forest protocols and what you can do to help
