Sierra Club

Our Sierra Club Connection and Loma Prieta GLS

Sierra Club
Loma Prieta GLS is a local activity section of the national Sierra Club, which has about 630,000 members and is considered one of the oldest and most well respected grass roots environmental organizations in the world. Our local Sierra Club, the Loma Prieta Chapter, has 22,000 members and encompasses San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Benito counties in California. The Loma Prieta Chapter also has other activity sections, each with a Governing Committee ("GovCom") which is responsible to the chapter's "Executive Committee ("ExCom").

Loma Prieta's GLS section began in the fall of 1991, as an offshoot of the San Francisco Bay Chapter GLS. We hold a unique place in Sierra Club history, as one of the first seven GLS sections in America. Most GLS sections have websites. Please feel free to email us about how you can form a GLS section in your area of the country.

Sign up today, and show your support while enjoying the outdoors! If the Loma Prieta Chapter is not in your area, try looking at our growing GLS sections through out the nation.

How did GLS get started?

Sierra Club
GLS sections are a relatively new development within the Sierra Club. San Francisco was the first GLS, organized in 1986 (National Sierra Club was incorporated in 1892!), followed by Angeles GLS in the same year. Seven other GLS sections have been established in the San Diego, Loma Prieta, Ventana, Motherlode, Cascade Chapter and Rocky Mountain chapters of the Sierra Club. Only two GLS sections exist outside of California. Doesn't seem fair, does it? But you can change that if you live in an area without a GLS. We encourage new GLS sections and would be glad to support you in establishing one in your area. It would be wonderful to see sections in the South, Midwest, Southwest, Alaska, Hawaii, etc! Please contact us for information about beginning a GLS section.
