The Loma Prietan - July/August 2010

Executives Wanted

by Margaret Okuzumi

Are you a good fit for the Executive Committee?

The Sierra Club is the largest volunteer-driven environmental organization in the country, and the Loma Prieta Chapter is the third largest in California. We are governed by an Executive Committee (ExCom), which functions much like a board of directors. It's now that time of year when we seek candidates to serve a twoyear term beginning in January 2011.

The mission statement says the ExCom "seeks to organize, empower and inspire our leaders and members to achieve the Sierra Club's mission through activism and civic engagement. [It is] responsible for overseeing the management and financial sustainability of our chapter and assuring a structure that supports the development and success of our grassroots leaders."

The ExCom also provides final policy approval for the Chapter and is responsible for ensuring that Chapter actions are compliant with Club and Chapter policy and interests.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking people who love the Sierra Club and who are passionate about the environment, and who can commit for two years to making ExCom and Club service a high priority.

ExCom members should be willing to assist the Chapter in fundraising and in representing the Club positively in the community. ExCom members are expected to spend a minimum of five to ten hours a month on ExCom business and typically will take on additional duties as liaison to other chapter entities, groups, campaigns and activities.

The ideal candidate is well-informed in one or more aspects of environmental protection or stewardship and has at least one of the following:

• familiarity with the workings of the Club or the Chapter;

• the executive and leadership ability to look at the big picture and make decisions;

• knowledge of local, city or state politics;

• experience with nonprofit organizations and volunteer management or fundraising.

If this describes you, consider applying to serve on the ExCom. The deadline to apply is August 16. Please contact me at 408-732-8712 to apply or to suggest others.
