Chapter’s First Year in the Human Race Walk-a-Thon
by Judy Kaufmann
On May 12th, a beautiful Saturday morning, the annual Human Race Walk-A-Thon was held statewide. The Loma Prieta Chapter had participants from both San Mateo and Santa Clara counties at Coyote Point Park and Almaden Lake Park respectively. This event helped raise money for dozens of nonprofit groups and drew walkers, runners, and many more who organized, tabled, and handed out literature. Aside from those participating, there were many who simply enjoyed the sun, the parks and watching the crowd. It was great to be with fellow members while raising money for our Chapter.
The Chapter wishes to thank the participants who walked and raised money this year for the Sierra Club, and hope to have their support in future years as well. Enormous effort is required the first year of any new event, and we appreciate the time and energy everyone put in to make it a success and a fun day for all. We hope that this encourages others to join in next year. Results of the race are still being tallied at the volunteer centers. We will announce the names of Chapter walkers, including our two top fundraisers, in the next issue of the Loma Prietan.
In the meantime, special thanks to the volunteers who helped pass out Sierra Club literature that morning: Aline Bier, Santiago Guevara, and John Beall. And thanks to
Virginia Laibl for helping with the preparations and recruitment.
