San Mateo Supervisors Feel the Heat
by Richard Zimmerman
In a hot room packed with San Mateo County residents, two San Mateo County Supervisors learned first hand just how strongly their constituents oppose San Francisco International Airport’s plan to fill the Bay.
Trouble in Garlic Country
by Autumn Bernstein
Like many small towns on the outermost edge of the Bay Area, Gilroy is facing tremendous growth pressures. Driven out by skyrocketing housing costs, Silicon Valley “refugees” are fleeing to these small towns in search of affordable housing. As a result, prime farmland and open space is paved over to make way for subdivisions, strip malls, and office parks.

CALFED Legislation Undermines Efforts to Restore the Bay-Delta
by Carl Zichella
CALFED, the Federal-State restoration plan for the San Francisco-San Joaquin Bay-Delta, may be on the verge of collapse—a victim of legislative proposals by Rep. Ken Calvert and our own U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. These proposals would modify previous agreements and play favorites with some of the special interests that have reduced the once-rich estuary to a system in deepening ecological trouble.
Historic Effort to Protect CA’s Coast Needs Your Support
by Kaitilin Gaffney
Over the next few months, Californians will have a chance to make history with the implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act. Unfortunately, the Act faces strong opposition from some commercial and recreational fishing interests. The Governor and the Department of Fish and Game need to hear that you support full protection for some areas of California’s underwater wilderness.
Human Race Winners
A big THANKS goes to those who pledged and those who ran or walked for the Chapter. You brought in $2000 and were true pioneers in our first year of participation in this "Human Race."
