Guadalupe Group’s Candidates’ Statements

Candidate: Marjorie Ottenberg
Residence: Saratoga
Occupation: Retired
Education: B.A. Chemistry, Secondary Teaching Credential

Statement:

I’ve been active in the Guadalupe Group for about 15 years, some times as editor of The Guadalupan and/or Group Chair, speaking for the Group before Planning Commissions, City Councils and Board of Supervisors on environmental issues. I’ve assisted locally on State initiative petition campaigns. I also lead Off-leash Dog Hikes for dog lovers in parks where dogs are welcome. As land use, sprawl and air quality problems proliferate in our Valley, we need more activists to write and speak for protection of our environment; I hope to inspire more members to become more active this year.

Candidate: Teresa Nemeth
Residence: Santa Clara
Occupation: Quality assurance clerk
Education: Some college; self-taught on environmental issues

Statement:

Sierra Club member and hike leader since 1997, Secretary of Guadalupe Group ’97-98, and Chair/Co-Chair of the Group in ’99 and 2000. Volunteer trail patroller and special projects helper for Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Received Chapter New Activist Award in 1998. As a culture, we must remain active in solving environmental problems; overpopulation has strained natural resources and endangered ecosystems. Clean air and water and restored environment are essential for a healthy life. We must be involved in protection and restoration of the ecosystems of wilderness and oceans. Sierra Club can lead the way for environmental change so that future generations can live in balance with nature and a sustainable society.

Candidate: Werner Barasch
Residence: Los Gatos
Occupation: Retired

Statement:

After surviving the Holocaust, I came to this country and am now a U.S. citizen. I’ve been a Sierra Club member for 38 years and in the Guadalupe Group since it was founded. I have been active in several Activity Sections. For many years I have served as Legislative liaison for the Guadalupe Group—writing letters to federal and state legislators and other officials on issues important to our membership and the environment (in the name of the Group, when requested and authorized by the Group to do so). If elected I plan to continue this function.
