Park Bond Act
Late last week, in the waning hours of the California Legislative’s session, AB 1602—the California Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhood Parks, and Coastal Protection Act of 2002—passed out of both houses. It now sits upon Governor Davis’ desk awaiting his signature, which will place this $2.6 billion bond act, the largest natural resources bond ever, on the March 2002 ballot for decision by California voters.
Please join us in writing letters to Governor Davis asking that he sign AB 1602 so that we have a chance to decide at the polls whether conservation should be funded.
Following is a brief list of what would be funded should this $2.6 billion bill make it to the ballot and then receive a passing vote:
• $225 million for acquisition and development of the state park system
• $832 million for acquisition and development of neighborhood, community, and regional parks and recreation areas
• $445 million for a variety of “Conservancies” such as the Coastal Conservancy, California Tahoe Conservancy, San Joaquin River Conservancy
• $300 million for clean beaches, watershed protection, and water quality projects
Please contact Governor Davis about AB 1602; urge him to sign the bill for placement on the ballot. Express to him that the environment—our natural treasures—deserve and need our protection and that this bond will help tremendously in that effort.
