The Loma Prietan
February 2002
Special 'Thank You' to Year 2001 Volunteers
The Loma Prieta Chapter owes a debt of gratitude to all the volunteers who show up for tabling events, mailings, phone banks, office work and all the other times the Chapter puts out a call for help! The staff would like to give a personal thank-you to those of you who volunteered beyond the call of duty in 2001.
The Executive Committee meets monthly but the
time these leaders devote to the Chapter extends beyond these meetings.
A special thanks to Christine Gardner, who after four
years as the volunteer Chapter Treasurer is moving on to other
endeavors. Mark Reedy also volunteered in several
capacities over the past four years, including the Chapter's Personnel
Chair. A special thanks to those who served on the Executive Committee
this past year, but are not returning in 2002: Peter Drekmeier
(Conservation Chair), Tim Sampson (Black
Mountain Group Rep.), and John Cordes (IT Chair).
First and foremost the Chapter staff thanks
Emily Renzel and Tom Harder for faithfully showing up every Tuesday morning to process donations. Their dedication to the Chapter is outstanding and we would not be able to do it without them.
Without financial resources the Chapter could not
function, so thanks go out to volunteers and leaders who helped with
fundraising. The Executive Committee along with Carol Wolf, Bob
Carlson, Jim Goeser, Francis Goeser, Ruth Troetschler, Marj Ottenberg,
and Bob Wallace participated in fundraising
phonathons. The June fundraising mailing was staffed by Mary
Bernstein, Jane Kos, Ginny Laibl, Elizabeth Perrier, Paul Feder, Harold
Drake, Marilyn Walter, Val Williams, Carol Jacobsen, Bob Black, Gertrude
Sherr, Laura Dravenstott, Dorothy Young, and Bob Young.
Judy Kaufman, Ginny Laibl, Paul Dorian, Mark Reedy, Rafael Reyes, Velma
Gentzsch, Dorothy Young, and Harold Clausen
helped label, stuff, and seal envelopes for the end-of-year fundraising mailing.
The year 2001 was the first year the Chapter
participated in the Human Race. This fundraiser turned out to be a lot
of fun and volunteer Ginny Laibl was key in helping get
the Human Race off the ground. We had participants from both San Mateo
and Santa Clara County: Georgia Stigall, Sandra Costa, Connie
Alonzo-Frisz, Merrily King, Dick Simpson, Laura Dravenstott, Bonnie
McClure, and Judy Kaufman walked at Coyote
Point. Rob Corrigan, Madeline Zimmeramn, Neil Zimmerman, Jon
Blackner, Eric Larkin, and Tina Engel
represented the Chapter at Almaden Lake Park.
It takes a great group of volunteers to staff
phone banks. Thanks to Bob Carlson, Jim Goeser, Francis Goeser,
Sylvia Gregory, Aline Bier, Gretchen Burke, Laura White, George Kranen,
David Smernoff, Pat Walker, Tim Gerard, Davida Rabbino, Kathy Diamond,
Sylvia Gregory, Peter Drekmeier, Jeff Segall, Mark Watson, Susan Bremond
Peter Schmidt, Leslie Weise, Paula Hartman, Linda MacKay, Angela
Mallett, Merrick Kosken, Darren Daukas, Fran Goeser, Pat Walker, George
Kranen, Kari O'Driscoll, Michele Cohen, Lewis Scarpad, Wim deWit,
Patrick Moore, Ginny Laibl, Erin Reddy, Ted Raczek, Lisa Costello
and Kirsten Price for their participation in the Chapter phone banks regarding the SFO Airport expansion.
The Chapter was well represented at Coastal
Cleanup Day. This event gave the Chapter an opportunity to get the word
out about our position on the SFO Airport expansion. Judy
Kaufman headed up the event with help from Danielle
Harris, Hugh Harris, Vernon Andrews, and Peter
Drekmeier .
Conservation Issues are the highest priority at
the Chapter and it takes a dedicated and high-energy group to work on
the many issues in which the Chapter is involved: Peter
Drekmeier (Chair), Bill Michel (Vice-Chair),
Richard Zimmerman (SFO Task Force), Joyce Eden
(Air Quality), Suparna Vashisht (Sustainable
Land Use), Kurt Newick (Global Warming and Energy),
Georgia Stigall (Native Plants), Ruth
Troetschler (Pesticides), Bill Hill
(Population Committee), Patrick Moore
(Transportation Committee), Irvin Dawid
(Transportation Committee), Mandy Rose (Water
Resources/San Benito), Ed Smith (Wildlife/Wilderness),
and Peter Niemann (Sierra Singles Conservation Representative).
The Political Committee owes special thanks to
Gary Bailey, Jessica Couleur,
Paula Hartman, Karen Maki,
Jeff McCartney, and Patrick Moore.
Their contributions were tremendous: researching issues, coordinating
meetings, interviewing candidates, discussing decisions, and lobbying
legislators. Rafael Reyes , Chair of the Political Committee, gets special thanks for keeping this group active and motivated. His dedication has made all the difference in the success of this committee.
Once again, we thank Ann Harding
for her invaluable editing skills and overseeing the editorial
process for the Loma Prietan. The LP is one of the
best ways to communicate with all Chapter members. We are lucky to have
many talented contributors and would like to offer our thanks to them:
Kay Bushnell, Karen Maki, Carl Ziochella, Autumn Berstein,
Shannon Tracy, Kaitilin Gaffney, Suparna Vashisht, Georgia Stigall,
Cindy Russell, M.D., Denise Dade, Ernie Goitein, Eric Reiter, Debbie
Mytels, Patrick Moore, Doug Bevington, Teri Shore, Mark Jordan, Sue
Hennike, Richard Zimmerman, Rafael Reyes, Dale F. Mead, Chris Corwin,
John Maybury, and Rebecca Block.
And last, but not least, are the volunteers who
gave their time helping out at the Chapter office: Ginny Laibl,
Jane Kos, Danielle Harris, Nate Bowen, Lisa Costello, Erin Reddy
and as previously mentioned, Tom Harder and
Emily Renzel . Their smiling faces and willingness to pitch in make the Loma Prieta Chapter a great organization.
For anyone who volunteered last year and does not see his or her name, please let us know. We do our best to keep track of all the volunteers but sometimes one or two names slip by us.
The Loma Prieta Chapter is only as good as the members who volunteer their valuable time to help make a difference. We cannot do it without you and we appreciate it any time we see a new or familiar face at a volunteer event. Our sincerest thanks and we hope to meet even more of you in the coming year.
