The Political Committee looked at the two "open" seats on the San Jose City Council. After interviewing the candidates, we are happy to endorse Terry Gregory for San Jose City Council District 7. Terry Gregory is a hands-on candidate with grassroots experience. He has been President of the Board of Directors, San Jose Conservation Corps, and in that position oversaw habitat conservation activities. In addition, he is a past president of the Coyote Creek Gardens Association, where he worked actively with his community in training over 150 community gardeners on how to implement organic methods. Gregory is an advocate for energy conservation, transit services and smart growth development. He is currently a two-term Member of the Franklin-McKinley School Board and his engagement in community level environmental activities make him a standout among the candidates.

We are not making a recommendation in District 9.

Sally Lieber for AD22

Sally Lieber is a widely recognized environmental champion, not only receiving our endorsement but also the support of the California League of Conservation Voters. We endorsed Ms. Lieber in 1998 for the Mountain View City Council due to her efforts on Moffett Field and her knowledge on environmental issues.

On the Council, she has shown herself as a hard worker pushing a wide range of important issues. A highly knowledgeable leader on energy and emissions, she advanced the purchase of electric vehicles for the city, elimination of polluting wood smoke fireplaces, and solar and green building guidelines for Mountain View. She has worked to protect open space at Cuesta Park Annex. She has also shown great integrity and actively sought the input of environmentalists in the community. As an assemblymember she will work to address the energy crisis in an environmentally responsible manner. She will push for enforcement of greenbelt areas and more incentives for in-fill and transit-oriented development. Sally Lieber is committed to preserving the quality of life in the Silicon Valley, and will fight to strengthen laws protecting endangered habitats and wildlife.

Dan Kelly for AD12

Dan Kelly, running for Assembly in the 12th District (San Francisco and Daly City) is intelligent about the broad range of environmental issues facing California, committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our population, and willing to work collaboratively with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups without being swayed by big money.

Dan states, "My priority issues throughout the campaign and as an assemblymember will be environment, health care, and education. The restoration and preservation of a healthy planetary ecosystem is the most important gift we can bequeath to our children."

Dan is a pediatrician, and in 10 years of uphill struggle on the San Francisco School Board has proven his commitment to honesty in government, to children, and to social justice. He has supported pedestrians and cyclists in need of Safe Routes to School. Sierra Club urges voters to elect Dan Kelly to the Assembly.

Ed. note: Dan Kelly's endorsement comes from the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club.
