Day Hiking

All hikes by the Day Hiking Section are open to the general public--Sierra Club membership is not required. All participants are required to sign a standard liability waiver. The hike schedule is available at www.sierraclub.org/chapters/lomaprieta/dayhiking/. Hikers new to the group are required to call the hike leader in advance. The hike rating system is as follows:

May 3 Burra Burra Sat. 5F. A Coe classic. We'll climb to Willson's Peak, head down into Canada de la Dormida, then ascend to Burra Burra Peak by a faint use trail. After lunch we'll take the trail around by Dowdy Ranch, returning by the Center Flats, Wagon, and Wasno Roads, descending on the Dexter and Grizzly Gulch trails. Possible wet stream crosssing. Meet at Highway 85 & Cottle Road P&R at 7 a.m. or at the Gilroy Hot Springs trailhead at 8 a.m. Bring at least four liters of water, or iodine/filter. May 3 Mount Tamalpais Sat. 3C. Circumambulate this majestic mountain! From Mountain Home Inn, around to Lake Lagunitas, continuing on Eldridge Grade, and heading back to the cars on Hoo-Koo-E-Koo! May 7 Windy Hill Wed. 2B. Fast-paced evening hike through Windy Hill. Bring water, snacks, and a windbreaker. Meet at the park on Portola Rd. at 6 p.m. sharp. Leader: Tom Driscoll 650/938-2106.

May 10 Sunol to Del Valle 4D (20 miles). Strenuous; moderate pace. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Wilderness permit ($2) required. Meet at 7:15 a.m. at Mission Blvd. and I-680 P&R next to McDonald's to arrange for car shuttle. Call leaders if you have not hiked with this group before. May 10 Mission Peak to Del Valle Sat. 6E. Strenuous hike that will start at Mission Peak and meet up with and join the Sunol to Del Valle hike (see above). Bring lots of water. May 24 Ed Levin to Sunol and back Sat. 4D. We will hike from Ed Levin to Sunol for lunch, and return with a possible diversion up Mission Peak. June 7 Sweeney Ridge/Coast/Montara Mtn. Sat. 4D. Moderate pace but fairly strenuous. Begin Skyline College, follow trails to Pacifica coastal bluffs and beach, up Montara Mountain, return via Sweeney Ridge. Hopefully great views. Meet 8 a.m. Edgewood and I-280 P&R. Inner City Outings

ICO works with community agencies to provide outdoor activities to youth whose opportunities to participate is otherwise limited. Volunteers of all levels of commitment needed. Programs are with agencies throughout the Loma Prieta region. Mostly weekend trips include day hikes, backpacking, river rafting, and cross country skiing. Phone 408/236-3794.

May 4 Maguire Peak 2B2 Sun. A springtime visit to Maguire Peaks in Sunol Regional Park. We'll loop on Hayfield Trail and return on Welch Creek and the elusive Hidden Trail. May 15 Mission Peak Sunset and Full Eclipse of the Moon Hike, Thurs. 2B2 (5.5 mi and 1700 ft). This is a dog-friendly hike. May 18 Purisima Creek Redwoods, Sun. 2B2. Relax while walking among stately redwoods, alder, and big leaf maple trees along a pretty creek. May 30-June 2 Lost Coast 2A. A favorite GLS destination at the southern end of Humboldt County. This year's trip will be a straightforward backpack from Black Sands Beach to Hadley Creek and back, with optional exploration of Hadley Creek or Shipman Creek or both. June 11 Arastradero Off-Road Ride Wed. 6:30 p.m. 1A2 (5 miles; 500 feet). Easy mountain bike ride near Palo Alto with great views and wildlife, fire road and singletrack. Bring water and helmet. June 14 Montara Mountain, 9 a.m. 2B2 (9 miles; 2000 ft). We'll drive to San Pedro Valley County Park and hike through the park on our way to Montara Mountain. June 22 Sanborn-Skyline County Park, Sun. 9 a.m. 2B2. This lushly wooded park in Saratoga connects Sanborn Creek with Skyline Ridge, covering some 2,850 acres of mountain terrain in between. We'll ascend about 1,000 feet to reach Indian Rock, where we'll have a splendid view of the Santa Clara Valley below. Bring water and lunch. Meet at the Tamien P&R. July 3-6 Lassen Car Camp. Join us at Butte Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park over 4th of July weekend for a swim in the lake, or one of several hikes. We have spots for 25 people. Carpooling will be required. $30/person. This is a fundraiser event; all proceeds go to the Loma Prieta Chapter. Peak Climbing

The Peak Climbing Section (PCS) is a group of mountain climbers who rally around the shared enjoyment of being in the mountains and the thrill of climbing. Climbs are usually in the Sierra and don't require technical rock climbing. The PCS meets on the second Tuesday of each month. We have a newsletter, Scree, that contains reports of past trips, announcements of future trips, and articles of interest. articles of interest. The San Mateo Hiking Section offers moderate hikes three times a week. Hikes start at 10 a.m. unless otherwise specified. Bring water and lunch. Singleaires are friendly, active, single people 40 and up who enjoy outdooor activities and conservation. Hikes are offered each Sunday (1A to 3C) followed by a potluck. Sierra Singles

Sierra Singles are energetic, single adults, with typical ages from the 20's to 40's who enjoy hiking, biking, volleyball, backpacking, skiing, dancing, movies, rafting, potluck dinners, conversation, and much more. Ski Touring

The Ski Touring Section (STS) organizes cross-country ski trips to the Sierra and elsewhere. Meetings are the first Monday of each month, November through May. Membership at $5 per year entitles you to electronic distribution of our newsletter Track; $15 per year brings you a hard copy. Loma Prieta Paddlers

Loma Prieta Paddlers share paddling interests (mostly whitewater kayaking), trips, practice, conservation. Meetings at 7:30 p.m., 2nd Wednesday of each month (except December) at Western Mountaineering, El Camino at San Tomas, Santa Clara. Willis McNeill, Chair, 408/262-5876. Black Mountain Group

The Black Mountain Group of the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter invites you to hike with us. Our activity schedule is sustained by volunteer leaders. If you want to lead a hike or other activity, please contact our activities coordinator, Paul Worden, 650/857-1623. We prefer moderate hikes combining good exercise with good companionship, appreciation of nature, and plenty of variety. If you are unsure about times, meeting places, or requirements for a hike, please check with the leader for details. Always bring plenty of water and lunch, unless indicated otherwise. May 17 The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park Sat. 3B (11 mi., 1700 ft.) Moderately paced hike with some steep sections. Ascend the West Ridge Trail to our lunch spot at Sand Point Overlook, enjoying mountain and ocean views. Return via Loma Prieta Grade, visiting historic logging sites. No-host carpool 8 a.m. at Page Mill and I-280 P&R, or meet 9:30 a.m. at George's Picnic Area parking lot, one mile north of the park entrance kiosk on Aptos Creek Road, in Aptos. May 24 Mission Peak via Sunol Sat. 2B (10 miles, 2000 ft.). Hike west from Sunol Regional Wilderness up to Mission Peak. Travel along the Ohlone Wilderness Trail. Enjoy great views both on the way up and back. Bring lunch and liquids. Carpool 8:30 a.m. at Page Mill and I-280 P&R or meet 9:30 a.m. in Sunol at the Visitor Center parking lot. Heavy rain cancels. June 1 Henry Coe from Hunting Hollow Sun. 2C (10 mi, 2500 ft). Hike down Hunting Hollow and up Wagon Road to Willson Ranch, returning along Steer Ridge. We'll be hiking at a steady pace and enjoying the flowers and the views. If you like to hike fast, this is not the hike for you. Meet at 8:30 a.m. Page Mill and I-280 P&R or 9:45 a.m. at the Hunting Hollow entrance. Bring lunch and lots of water. There is no water at trailhead. Leader: Libby Vincent 650/424-8731.

June 7 Butano State Park Sat. 3B (11 mi., 1700 ft.). Moderately paced hike with some steep sections. Join us for a loop hike exploring Little Butano Creek Canyon, with lunch in a redwood grove. Optional additional 1.5-mile hike visiting Ano Nuevo/Six Bridges Trails. No-host carpool 8:30 a.m. at Page Mill and I-280 P&R, or meet 9:30 a.m. at the picnic area parking lot 1/4 mile past the Butano entrance kiosk on Cloverdale Road in Pescadero. Guadalupe Regional Group

Guadalupe Regional Group includes mid- and south Santa Clara County and all of San Benito County, but all Sierra Club members are welcome. May 15 "How Wet Can It Get?" Thurs. 7:30 p.m. Dams proposed by S.C. Valley Water District for Henry Coe State Park would drown popular trails and campsites. Coe Park Dam Ad Hoc Committee will lead discussion of proposals and alternatives for providing clean water throughout South Bay. Guadalupe General meeting in Rm. 24, Harker School (directions above). Refreshments; BYOC!

May 18 Off-leash dog hike Sun. East Bay Regional Park, Mission Peak, Morgan Territory, or beach walk if weather is warm. Moderate hike, 5-7 mi.; dogless hikers welcome. May 18 Point Lobos Sun. Seven mile hike at a gentle pace in Point Lobos State Park. Dramatic spot where cliffs and sea meet. One of the most photographed parks in California; great for watching seals, sea otters, sea birds, etc. For time and meeting place, call leader: Linda 408/778-7122.

San Carlos/Belmont Regional Group

The San Carlos/Belmont Regional Group meets monthly (except July and August) usually on the 3rd Sunday. We emphasize rather easy hikes close to home and programs relevant to our two cities (with a few exceptions for variety). Pot Luck Meetings: Call the host to make your reservation and for the meeting location. Please bring your own table service and food (main dish, salad, or dessert) to serve about six. We customarily contribute $1 per drink serving at the social time to defray costs. Usually social time starts after 5:30, dinner at 6:00, business meeting and program from 7:00 until 9:00.
