July 3-7 Grouse Ridge, Five Lakes Basin (2B). Limit 8 people. Early in the season this area melts out faster than almost anywhere of comparable altitude. It abounds in beautiful lake scenery and flowers. We will hike out to Five Lakes Basin where we will spend a layover day to explore the area and possibly climb the Black Buttes. Aug. 8-12 Thousand Island Lake Loop Backpack (2B). From Agnew Meadows to 1st camp at 1000 Island Lake via the Middle Fork San Joaquin River. Traverse Garnet Lake to camp at Shadow Lake. Day hike to Ediza and Minerets Lakes. 18.9-mile backpack with 2,760 feet of elevation gain. Central commissary. $14. Aug. 9-17 Florence Lake Evolution Valley Ionian Basin (3C). Limit 8 people. A 9-day trip starting from Florence Lake and doing a loop out to Ionian Basin using Evolution Valley and Goddard Canyon. This trip is for experienced backpackers only. This route requires cross-country travel on rough and rocky terrain in the Ionian Basin with a possible climb of Mount Goddard. We will start at the beginning of Florence Lake at 9 a.m. and take the boat taxi across the lake (additional fee). Leader: Dave Barry. Assistant Leader: Elizabeth Schoendaler. Aug. 15-17 Poison Lake, Carson-Iceberg Wilderness (2B). No, it’s not really poison. Enjoy Silver King Valley, Soda Cone, and ridgetop views on this eastern Sierra trip. One layover day for day-hiking, fishing, or hanging out by the lake. Group size limited to 8; individual commissary. Co-listed with BiOutdoors and the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans. Aug. 23- Sept. 2 King’s Canyon National Park, Baxter Pass, Mt. Clarence King and vicinity (2Dxc). This trip requires that you have previous experience doing steep, high-altitude cross-country, and that you perform regular and strenuous physical exercise. Individual commissary. Group size small. Baxter’s climb will be 900 feet per mile on average. Mt. Clarence King’s elevation is 12,905 ft. Day hiking opportunities include Mt. Gardiner, Mt. Cotter, Fin Dome, Gardner Basin, King’s Spur, and Sixty Lake Basin. Most elevations are between 10,000 ft. and 11,000 ft. Leader Rolly Wentz 408/745-1085.
Aug. 28-Sept. 2 Tuolumne Meadows to Vogelsang Lake (2B). Limit 8 people. This is a nice trip to the areas just south of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite. A long tour of the open space preserves along the South Skyline Region including: Los Trancos, Montebello, Coal Creek, Russian Ridge, Skyline Ridge, Long Ridge, and Upper Stevens Creek County Park. Climb East Peak from Fairfax via Lake Lagunitas and the rugged East Peak Fire Trail, then wander through the deep forests and serpentine outcrops of the mountain’s north side. Meet 8:30 a.m. at Deer Park at the end of Porteous Ave. in Fairfax. Take Sir Francis Drake, then Fairfax-Bolinas Road. Porteous is 0.5 mile on left. Inner City Outings
ICO works with community agencies to provide outdoor activities to youth whose opportunities to participate is otherwise limited. Volunteers of all levels of commitment needed. Programs are with agencies throughout the Loma Prieta region. Mostly weekend trips include day hikes, backpacking, river rafting, and cross country skiing. Phone 408/236-3794.

Aug. 29-31 Kings Canyon National Park Labor Day Weekend Campout. Join us this holiday weekend as we explore this glaciated valley with its towering granite cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, and powerful river. GLS will provide a variety of day hikes, but other possible activities include bicycling, horseback riding, swimming, and bus tours. We have reserved a group site for 30 people in Canyon View Campground in Cedar Grove, right alongside the Kings River. Cost for three nights of camping is $30 per person. Peak Climbing
The Peak Climbing Section (PCS) is a group of mountain climbers who rally around the shared enjoyment of being in the mountains and the thrill of climbing. Climbs are usually in the Sierra and don’t require technical rock climbing. The PCS meets on the second Tuesday of each month. We have a newsletter, Scree, that contains reports of past trips, announcements of future trips, and articles of interest. articles of interest. July 19 Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, Sat. 3C (12 mi., 2100 ft.). Moderately paced hike with some steep sections. Hike up the hill from Purisima Creek to Bald Knob Trail, and stroll along Irish Ridge Trail. Enjoy scenic ocean views (fog permitting), and lunch under a mammoth old growth redwood. No host carpool 8:30 a.m. at Page Mill & I-280 Park & Ride, or 9:30 a.m. at Higgins Purisima Road/Purisima Creek Road entrance to the preserve (the western entrance of the preserve, near Half Moon Bay). Aug. 2 Montebello Ridge New Member Hike
Sat. 2B (7 mi 1000 ft). Open to anyone interested. Regular members, come welcome our new members. New members and wannabes, find out what it’s all about. Scenic figure-eight through two local parks in the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Carpool at 10 a.m. at Page Mill and I-280 Park & Ride. Bring lunch and liquids. Aug. 9 Stanford Campus Hike Sat. 2A (10 miles 500 ft). Explore the sights on Stanford Campus. Meet at Page Mill and I-280 Park & Ride at 8:30 a.m. Follow the leader on a zigzag trail past Lake Lagunita, then through the Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden stopping to admire architecture en route to the Rodin garden for lunch. Aug. 16 Wilder Ranch Sat. 2A (6 miles, 10 feet). Walk along beaches and cliffs north of Santa Cruz. Carpool from Los Gatos Park & Ride at 10 a.m., or no-host carpool at Page Mill Park & Ride at 9:45. Hike starts 11 a.m. at trailhead. Bring lunch, liquid. Leader: Shawn Britton 408/ 551-0722.
Aug. 23 Portola Redwoods State Park. Please join us for the Loma Prieta Chapter Hike and Potluck Extravaganza at the Ramada Group Day Use Area, Portola Redwoods State Park. The Black Mountain Group will be hosting this event for LP Chapter members and friends. There will be hikes for all levels; boots recommended. Hikers must meet at Page Mill Park & Ride for carpooling into the park (see times listed below). Hikes will end at approximately the same time (4:30-5 p.m.) so we can enjoy a meal and conversation together. If you are not interested in hiking, please drive in and enjoy the potluck. The Ramada Area is on the left, 1/2 mile past the campground road. The Chapter will provide the fires to barbecue your favorite food and a program filled with surprises. Please bring something to barbecue, your own plate, eating utensils, and a potluck dish to share. There will be a fireside, ranger-led talk on the environmental concerns of Portola Redwoods State Park.
Hike choices and carpool times:
• 11 a.m. Slate Creek/Tiptoe Falls (6 miles 1500'). Try out your skills and learn about the environmental impact of logging on this short hike with 2 three-mile loops. Bring snacks and water.
• 10 a.m. Tarwater Loop (8 miles 1500'). Trek the Tarwater loop past old mill sites and bubbling creek tar. Bring lunch and water.
• 9 a.m. Peter’s Creek (13 miles 2000'). Visit Peter’s Creek with its protected stands of old growth redwoods. Bring lunch and water. Leader: Clyde Lerner Clyde*itmcomputing.com (change * to @).
• 7 a.m. Butano Ridge 3C (15+ mi, approx. 3000' gain) Follow Butano Ridge Trail to Big Basin where we’ll loop around on the Skyline to the Sea Trail and back. Moderately fast paced hike. Leader: Debbie Benham 650/964-0558.

Guadalupe Regional Group
Guadalupe Regional Group includes mid- and south Santa Clara County and all of San Benito County, but all Sierra Club members are welcome. July 12-20 Marble Mountain Wilderness Area Backpack. This part of California is like the Sierra with high mountains, blue lakes, deep valleys, and tall forests. It’s also like the Northwest, with plenty of water, deep snow drifts, and lush meadows with flowers. Elevations are lower so there’s more oxygen in the lungs to make the uphills easier.
