San Mateo's Bay Meadows II Project update

by Rafael Reyes

We continue our efforts at "greening" the Bay Meadows project in San Mateo, the most important transit-oriented project on the Peninsula. San Mateo has the opportunity on this 83-acre site to create one of the most vibrant, livable communities in California.

Last month we met with representatives from the Bay Meadows Land Company as well as testified before the San Mateo Planning Commission. We have been successful in pushing for a larger park and improved pedestrian friendliness in the design but important details remain.

We would like to see stronger sustainability elements, especially around energy and water efficiency. Energy and water are already big issues in the state but given growth pressures and global warming, they will certainly become much bigger. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, a standard for sustainability in building, is one way to ensure strong efficiency elements are in place.

Make your voice heard! Let the San Mateo City Council know you support the Bay Meadows project and that you want strong sustainability elements.
