The PCS Quiz #1 Contest Results
This contest began at 3:00 PM (PDT) on Thursday, August 23, 2001 and concluded at 11:59:59 PM on September 21, 2001.

With the contest over, you may still play the quiz for fun.  Quiz #1 originally had open questions, but it has been converted into a multiple-choice, auto-scoring form.  If you prefer, you can simply view the answers.
Quiz #1 Winners
The response to this contest was underwhelming, to say the least.  A mere six people submitted entries.  This may have been due in part to the difficulty of the questions, the meager prizes, the limited advertisement of the contest, or simply general disinterest.  The comments that were received all seemed to indicate that the quiz was much too difficult.  Here are a couple that summed this up pretty well:

Neato quiz....harder than shit, though!!! -- R.B.
I looked at it and can only say: I flunk! -- D.R.

This surprised me, as I was expecting some folks to come close to getting all the questions.  I had even included one question that I thought impossible to answer (#25) in order to thwart the 100% scores I anticipated.  Clearly, I grossly overestimated the breadth of knowledge and level of motivation of those who looked at the quiz!

The scoring method was straightforward, if a bit brutal:  Each correct answer was worth one point, an unanswered question was worth zero, and an incorrect answer cost you a full point.  This last part seemed to escape some of the participants as errors numbered quite high in a few cases.  Because of the poor turnout and difficulty of the quiz, one could have been in the money with a relatively low score.

R.J. Secor was the clear and uncontested winner, kicking everybody else's ass with a score of 15.  Second and third places were each won with a score of only 3 points, with second place going to the earlier entry.

Here are the results (out of a total of 25 questions):
