This peak is the highest in Monterrey county. The walk up is mildly strenuous with an altitude gain of 3900+ ft in 6 miles, one way, but the view is well worth the effort. There may be snow on the summit, so please dress properly and wear proper hiking boots. Pouring rain cancels. Carpool: Carl's Jr. at Dunne Ave exit from 101 in Morgan Hill at 7:00 a.m. or call the leader for trailhead information. Note: There is a need to have a parking permit, per car, to park at the trailhead. The leaders will be getting information about the same, as the day of the trip nears. This trip is co-listed with the Day Hiking Section.
Starting from the snow park at the top of H/W 80 near Boreal Ski Resort we will ski or snow show to Castle Pass and then to Castle Peak. If conditions are right, we will make an attempt on the true summit, otherwise, we will go only as far as the "winter" summit. This is a restricted Sierra Club Trip. Participants must be Sierra Club members. Participants must bring and be experienced in using ice axe and crampons for their own safety. Participants who are interested in an attempt on the true summit should also bring a harness and belay/rappel device, be experienced in the use of ropes for safety and know how to tie in to the belay. Bring a Snow Park Permit for your car. Send your Sierra Club member number along with a climbing resume to the leaders.
This is a wonderful loop with great vistas from the ridge. This hike will be fast and strenuous. Please call the leaders if you haven't hiked with this group. Heavy rain cancels. Carpool: 7:30 am at Cubberley High in Palo Alto (Middlefield & Montrose), or 7:45 am at Cottle & 85 Park & Ride, or 8:30 am at Henry Coe Park Hdqs. This hike is co-listed with the PCS.
On Sat., from Canebrake Rd (ca. 5500, beyond Lk. Isabella) hop 6 mi. 1 way to a "nasty" cl. 2 taverse and a short cl. 3 slab and scramble to Spanish Needle. No snow expected, except possibly for the last bit. Sat. nite, car camp at unimproved campground. On Sun. AM, parade 3 mi. 1 way to the barely cl. 2 Lamont.
This is a restricted outing of the Sierra Club. To participate, you must be a Sierra Club Member. Participants must be experienced on class 3 terrain and will be required to use a helmet. Our practice will emphasize safe rock climbing using rock climbing gear. The goal is to cover the kind of rock climbing situations one might encounter during mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada. We will practice climbing rock routes of class-4 and easy class-5 (up to about 5.4) levels. Participants will train in general use of ropes, tying knots, using harnesses, using protections devices, setting anchors, using slings and biners, providing belay to leaders, top rope belay to followers, tying in to a belay station, using belay devices, and practice rappelling. We do not intend to train in leading rock climbing. The theory session will take place in the Peninsula Conservation Center. The practice itself will take place in the Pinnacles National Monument.
Sat. we'll go from Mtn Home St. Pk (6,800) 3 mi. to Moses (9,331), then continue on 6 mi. to camp at Summit Lake (9200). Sun. we'll bag Maggie (10,042, cl. 1) and hike out, about 13 mi. for the day. This is supposed to be a very scenic area, with a lot of very big and beautiful sequoias. This trip should be suitable for relative beginners, although you will need to be in reasonable shape.
This is a restricted official trip of the Sierra Club. You must be a Sierra Club member to sign up. We have reserved two campsites in Yosemite Valley in order to organize a weekend of rock climbing. You must have a partner, and one of you needs to be able to lead SAFELY the routes you are going to climb, while the other partner must be able to follow. You also must use your own gear. You must use a helmet. We will encourage, but not require, people to climb in groups for safety and company sake. I will be happy to keep a list of people who are looking for partners, but you will need to make the contact. To sign up, send a climbing resume (rock climbing), the name of your partner, and your Sierra Club member number to the above e-mail address or call Ron Karpel at 650-594-0211 at home.
Don't feel like carrying snowshoes, crampons and ice axe but still want to get out there? Come join us! These 2 peaks can be climbed as 2 separate day hikes but instead, we will link them via a loop trail and an overnight backpack in the South Sierra Wilderness (while enjoying some of the longest days of the year). The trip starts at Kennedy Meadows and exits at Fish creek Meadow where we will leave a car for a short shuttle. Day 1 is 12.5 miles with a 3500' gain and day 2 is 12.5 miles with a 2000' gain.
This is an official Sierra Club/PCS trip. Description: We drive from California to Nevada and then climb into California and then back to Nevada and then drive back to California, all in a weekend too! We will attempt Boundary Peak, the highest peak in Nevada and then the striking Montgomery Peak, in California, by crossing over the saddle between them, where these two states meet. We will climb these peaks in a day, on Sunday. We will car-camp at the trailhead that is accessed by the Queen's Canyon Road for Saturday night. Be prepared for an early start on Sunday.
As you hike up the Whitney Trail, and you pass through a meadow called Bighorn Park, you look up in horror at the tremendous sheer southeast wall of Thor Peak. Lucky for you, you decided to join me on the ascent, so we walk around to the back side of the mountain, and scoot up moderate scree and talus to the summit. My permit limits us to 4 people. It's early, so there will be plenty of snow and slush.
This is a restricted trip of the Sierra Club. Participants must be experienced in class-3 and 4 climbing. Late last season, a debate about identifying a few of the peaks led me to make an unplanned day trip to the area, and to realize that the 9 Echo Peaks are an attractive day trip destination. We will set ropes for peak #4 which is 4th class. If we have enough skilled climbers, some of us may climb peak #9 which is rated 5.7. The rest of the peaks are 3rd class. Send your Sierra Club member number along with a climbing resume to the leaders.
Sat. 14 miles from Horseshoe Mdw (9920') over Cottonwood Pass (11,120') to Rock Cr. (9520'). Sun. AM bag Guyot (10,892', cl. 2); then camp on summit of Cirque (cl. 1 - 2; 12,900'), for the day about 10 miles and 6000' gain. Why camp up there? Hopefully great sunset and sunrise views of Whitney (bring camera gear). Mon. walk out.
A leisurely trip to climb California's southernmost fourteener. We'll drive down on Friday and do a short backpack in, camping probably at or near one of the Cottonwood Lakes. Saturday we'll dayhike the peak via Old Army Pass, and hike out and drive home on Sunday. This is suitable as a beginner's trip. Most of the route is on trail or use trail. Limited to 10 people. There is a $5 charge for the permit, payable at or before the trailhead. Contact John to sign up or for more information. More details and carpool contact information will be sent out a week or so before the trip.
Join us for a carcamp in lovely Tuolumne Meadows! Saturday will be a long day as we summit Kuna and Koip Peaks with a total round trip of 16 mi. Sunday, maybe Mammoth Peak, depending on hikers' desires. Non-refundable fee of $4 holds your spot in Tuolumne Meadows Campground (Fri&Sat nights). Newcomers and Sierra Club members will be given preference and we're limiting total participants to 10. Contact Debbie Benham for further information.
Tuesday we hike over Kearsarge Pass and make our way to East Lake. Wednesday we will shoot for North Guard, and perhaps move our camp. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will see us going after Ericsson, Stanford, and Junction, moving our camps as need be. Sunday we’ll hike back out over Kearsarge Pass, and drive home. This is a very scenic area, with a lot of very beautiful country, both forested and alpine. All four peaks are also supposed to be very special climbs, so I'm expecting this trip to be very spectacular. It will be challenging, however, so the trip needs to be limited to those with a good deal of experience. As well, we will probably need ice axes, and perhaps crampons; and we will also probably want to rope up for North Guard at least.
Another beautiful weekend up at Tuolumne! Saturday, we'll climb Tuolumne Peak. Then, on Sunday, an optional climb of Ragged Peak (class 3 summit knob!) for those so inclined. Non-refundable fee of $4 required to hold your spot in Tuolumne Meadows Campground (Fri&Sat nights). Limit 10 hikers and newcomers/Sierra Club members given preference. Contact leaders for more information.
Friday: from Road's End in King's Canyon (5,036), we'll hike about 13 miles along the Woods Creek trail, past the Mist Falls and through Paradise Valley, to the confluence of an unnamed creek and Woods Creek (7760). Saturday: bag Pyramid (12,779) via the south slope (class 3), which includes a knife-edge ridge per Secor, and return to camp. Sunday: back home we go. This is another beautiful section of the Sierra, and one which is not that often visited by the PCS, so sign on now for your exclusive ticket to hike.
Saturday we'll hike in to Upper Horton Lakes where we'll set up camp. Sunday we'll climb Four Gables and hike out. Depending on how we feel, we may actually do Four Gables on Saturday so that we can laze around on Sunday, or maybe even climb Basin. Or maybe not. There are several alternate routes, and we'll pick one that is suitable for the skill level of the group. We should get some pretty good views of the Sierra since the peak is right on the edge of Humphries Basin. This trip is suitable for beginners with some backpacking skills who are in reasonably good shape.
This is a class 2/3 trip and Secor writes that there is a "magnificent view from the summit of Sawtooth". Saturday, we will establish camp at Crystal Lake. Sunday, we will head for Needham first, then do the traverse over to Sawtooth Peak and descend back to camp via the South Ridge. The trip is limited to 8 people. This trip is suitable to beginners with backpacking experience. Please contact the leader or coleader to sign up.
We'll tramp up the steep and dry Lewis Creek from Kings Canyon, make camp at Grizzly Lake, and summit on Sunday. A previous climber wrote about the enjoyable class 3 summit spire, "The granite was solid, the ledges were wide, and millenia of erosion had produced lovely lumps, knobs, and other, more fanciful, shapes to serve as handholds." Though the summit is relatively low, the trailhead is even lower, and the trip overall is 7000 long vertical feet.
Our goal is to climb these Class 2 peaks before winter sets in. Adams, located 35 miles north of Lake Tahoe stands relatively high and offers great views of Shasta, Lassen and others. We will find out about the view from Ewell when we get there. Saturday we will climb Adams (2000' gain, 8 miles roundtrip) then drive to car camp near Elwell. Saturday evening enjoy leisurely dinner (bring an tern). Sunday climb Elwell (+2000', 8 miles r/t). NOTE: Adams is in an area that gets little snow, but this is not a snowshoe or ski trip and therefore significant snowfall will cancel. |
