If you have braved the permit quotas and plied the crowded trails of scenic Desolation Wilderness in the summer, you may have wondered how this oft-visited wilderness area got its ominously enchanting name. In the snowy grasp of winter, however, we will likely have the desolate alpine valley to ourselves. On Saturday, after packing in on skis or snowshoes over Echo Lakes into the vast, snow-covered Lake Aloha basin, we will set up base camp for our Sunday attempt of Jacks Peak and, time permitting, Dicks Peak. Experience with ice axe + crampons, avalanche awareness, and winter camping is recommended. This is a PCS Restricted trip, Sierra Club membership required. NOTE: All Sierra Club trips require you to sign a Liability Waiver.
Friday: Exact route depends on snow conditions. Hopefully, meet at base of Armstrong
Cnyn and 4-wheel up; approach hike towards Mt. Perkins (12,591, cl 2) or
Armstrong Col. (12,000, cl. 2). No snow alternative of Taboose Pass Trail.
We are organizing a weekend long trip to Sequoia NP for clean and simple rock climbing fun. You must have a partner, and one of you needs to be able to lead SAFELY the routes you are going to climb, while the other partner must be able to follow (at least). You also must use your own gear. You must use a helmet. I will be happy to keep a "looking for a partner list", but you will need to make the contact. Sequoia has lots of multi-pitch routes and it is not crowded like Yosemite. To help people who are new to the Sequoia rock climbing scene, we will group and go to some of the better locations on both days. To sign-up, send a climbing resume (rock climbing), the name of your partner (or if you want to be on the "looking for partner" list), and your Sierra Club member number to the above e-mail address or call Ron Karpel at 650-594-0211 at home. We will get sites in a nearby campground. Please indicate if you like to be included in the campground arrangements. There is also a possibility for free undeveloped camping at the National Forest area.
Join us for a spectacular hike along the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. Early
summer is the best time to see the waterwheels and cascades on the Tuolumne
river in their full glory. We will meet Friday morning at White Wolf
Campgrounds. We will then hike down into the canyon and follow the Tuolumne
river upstream over the next few days. We will exit Sunday at Tuolumne
meadows.
Location: Eastern Sierra
Yet another 14'er... and this one should be fun. This is a restricted (official) trip. You have to be a Sierra Club member. You have to be able to use ice axe and crampons for traversing the Palisade Glacier. We will climb the class 3 route, which is long and sustained. Three days allow plenty of time. We will start at Glacier Lodge on Big Pine Creek, out of the town of Big Pine, and set up camp in the vicinity of Finger Lake. Sunday we will climb the Northeast Face route. If time permits, we can hike out Sunday after the climb. Otherwise we can camp another night and hike out on Monday, enjoying the view.
This should be a relaxed and pleasant (except for mosquitoes) holiday weekend outing. We'll start with a boat ride (~$20 RT) across Lake Thomas Edison, followed by a backpack hike of 7 miles to the granite slabs above Mott Lake. The next morning we'll work through the challenges of the class 3 northeast ridge as we climb to the summit of Mt. Izaak Walton. We'll spend some time there enjoying the mosquito free alpine air. Hopefully, the late spring snow won't make an ice axe necesary. However, a bear canister will be advised.
This 3 day trip will start from Road's End in Kings Canyon National Park.
On Day 1, we will hike in the King's Canyon itself and follow
Bubbs Creek to establish camp at east lake (11.5 miles, 4400' of gain).
On day 2, we will climb Brewer from the East ridge (2.8 miles, 4000') and
return to camp. Day 3 will be used to get back to Road's End.
Join us for a backcountry stroll up the sloping side of Tenaya Peak! We've reserved two nights (Fri-Sat) at lovely Tuolumne Meadows campground with plans to climb Tenaya Peak on Saturday and 'pick-a-peak' on Sunday. A non-refundable fee of $8 will reserve your spot. PLEASE CONTACT DEBBIE TO SIGN UP. Must be comfortable hiking off-trail.
From Lake Thomas A. Edison it's a short hike to camp at Devil's Bathtub before we climb this Silver Divide peak. The names may sound scary, but the climbing isn't. The peak is primarily class 2, and any class 3 sections are relatively short and easy. Enjoy the onset of autumn in the mountains. Co-leader wanted.
In the deepest recesses of the Mono Recesses lies a peak named, appropriately enough, Recess Peak. We will approach this mountain from the west, up beautiful Bear Creek, and tackle its exquisite class 3 southwest ridge. Join us for this late summer adventure in the heart of the Sierra.
Two remote and rarely visited peaks:
We will approach these easy but seldom bagged southern Yosemite peaks from the south. The approach is not short, but we'll enjoy the wonderful light and crisp air that characterizes September in the Sierra. Beginners welcome. Co-leader wanted.
This 2 day trip will use the more challenging (read enjoyable) route up Goethe. From Goethe Lake, we will ascend to Alpine Col and follow a knife-edge ridge to the summit. Expect some exposure and Class 3. Day 1 will be 7.5 miles and 2200' from North Lake to camp. Day 2 should be just under a 12 hour day including a 6 hour round trip to the summit and hike out to North Lake. We have a permit for 8 people with solid class 3 experience. Contact Dee Booth to sign up.
This is a repeat of a trip that Gary Pinson led 13 years ago. "Climb Virginia Peak and four or five class 2 peaks! Spent the summer by the pool? If you're an efficient, conditioned alpinist, willing to rise early and hike late, you can redeem your reputation in one easy weekend." Co-leader accepted.
The weather cools, the days shorten, and the end of another climbing
draws closer. Come join us and add these peaks to your season's total,
without having to drag your backpacking gear anywhere.
Keep your fingers crossed for the mountain weather window to provide us one more fine weekend before winter sets in. We'll hike, light & fast, over Horse Creek Pass on Saturday to position ourselves for a climb of the infamous "chockstone" route on Sunday. Return home on Sunday. Participants must be comfortable with exposure on Class 3 rock. Winter storms cancel (or at least change plans). |
