Join us on this private trip to Roundtop and celebrate the arrival of spring.
The peak is approached by snow shoes or skis from the Carson Pass and
you need ice axe and crampons for the final few hundred feet. We
will meet Sunday morning at Carson Pass snowpark at around 8:00. We should
be back to the cars by 3:00. Please note that the parking at the
Carson Pass trailhead is a 'SnoPark', meaning that you need a day-permit,
per car, to park there. Permits are to be had at Western Mountaineering
and other outdoor stores and possibly, even the Kirkwood XC Ski Area.
There is also a substantial fine if found to be without one.

Hoping the road to Mineral King will be open so we can try this early season backpack to
Crystal Lake. Sunday's attempt on Needham will require a climb and descent of a snowy,
11,500' ridge above camp. Expect to use an ice axe and crampons. We should get some
great snowy views of the Kaweahs.

Even by its easiest route, this mountaineer's peak is steep and challenging.
Saturday we'll hike in to the Ediza Lake area. Sunday we'll attempt the peak
via the "rock route," which involves crossing a steep snowfield, some class-4
climbing, and some rappelling on the way down. Experience in all three areas
is required. Required gear includes ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet.
Monday we'll hike out.
